Contraceptive implants is a method approved in Canada since May 2020 but used in many countries for several years now. It consist of implanting a 4cm long and 2mm wide flexible rod under the skin, releasing progestogen into your bloodstream continuously.
It is inserted in clinic by a health care professional, local anesthetic will be provided to numb the skin where the insertion will happen. The implant is a reversible contraceptive and very effective, stopping ovulation for a maximum of 3 years.
The implant will be place on the inner upper arm right under the skin. The insertion technic is quite simple and will only take a few minute. The process is realized under local anesthesia by numbing the skin where the insertion happens. This contraceptive method is highly efficient for a maximum of 3 years only and would need to be either replaced or removed after its expiry.
Progestogen prevent ovaries from releasing the ovum every month and contributes to thicken the cervical mucus making it more difficult for the sperms to reach the ovum.
