Hormonal Intrauterine Device (LNG-IUD)

Hormonal Intrauterine Device (LNG-IUD)

The hormonal IUD is long-acting reversible contraceptive method used by more than 150 million women worldwide. This method is the most effective birth control on the market. IUDs are small T-shaped device inserted by health care professionals in the uterus. The levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG-IUS) contains progestin to interfere with ovulation and prevent pregnancy.

How does it work?

  • The integrated small cylinder in the LNG-IUD contains levonorgestrel which is released progressively in the uterus. The uterus wall will become thinner as the cervical mucus thicker, making it difficult for sperm to reach uterus.
  • The intrauterine device is implanted in the uterus by a health care professional. It is a fairly simple in clinic procedure, taking only a few minutes where no anesthesia is necessary.
  • The devise can stay in place for 3 to 10 years before it needs to be replaced.
