The hormonal IUD is long-acting reversible contraceptive method used by more than 150 million women worldwide. This method is the most effective birth control on the market. IUDs are small T-shaped device inserted by health care professionals in the uterus. The levonorgestrel intrauterine device (LNG-IUS) contains progestin to interfere with ovulation and prevent pregnancy.

How does it work?

The integrated small cylinder in the LNG-IUD contains levonorgestrel which is released progressively in the uterus. The uterus wall will become thinner as the cervical mucus thicker, making it difficult for sperm to reach uterus.
The intrauterine device is implanted in the uterus by a health care professional. It is a fairly simple in clinic procedure, taking only a few minutes where no anesthesia is necessary.
The devise can stay in place for 3 to 10 years before it needs to be replaced.
