What is an STI ?

A STI (Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections) is transmitted from person to another when intimated physical contact occurs, generally through sexual intercourses.

We can be infected by an STI and pass it on even when you have no symptoms. Most of the STIs won’t give any obvious sign of presence especially at the beginning of the infection. This is the reason infected people can pass it on without knowing it. The signs of a STI are usually very inconspicuous and intermittent. It is not necessary to have many partners to catch and develop a STI.

At you abortion appointment, the doctor will systematically do a STI screening for the following: Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and vaginal infections.

For IUD insertion, the doctor will evaluate the need and necessity to do a screening for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.

Symptoms might appear 2 to 3 weeks after the transmission of the bacteria, this delay can sometimes go up to 6 weeks.

You can fully recover from Chlamydia with medications. Anyone infected should seek the help of specialists rapidly in order to avoid complications.

Vaginal Infection

What is a vaginal infection ?

Vaginal Yeast Infection (Vulvo Vaginal Candidiasis) is a very common infection, about 75% of woman will develop yeast infection at least once in their life.

Vaginal Yeast Infection arise when the rate of vaginal candidiasis higher than normal. Candidiasis is a type of yeast that naturally lives in a human body, including the vagina.

You the most at risk of vaginal yeast infection under the following circumstances :

  • You are pregnant.
  • You have taken antibiotics recently.
  • Your immune system is weakened.
  • You had sexual intercourses.
  • You are diabetic.
  • Thick, whitish, lumpy, and odorless vaginal loss.
  • Vaginal and vulva irritation, pain, redness, swelling or burning sensation.
  • Pain and burning sensation when urinating.
  • Pain during sexual intercourses.

Antifungal treatment in the form of cream, ointment, oral tablets, or vaginal suppository will be recommended depending on the intensity and the frequency of the infections.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis during pregnancy can be related to very intensive symptoms and can take longer to treat.

Bacterial Vaginosis

What is Bacterial Vaginosis ?

Bacterial Vaginosis happens when harmful bacteria exceeds the numbers of good bacteria living naturally in the vagina.

This type of infection usually is the cause of vaginal unpleasant smell and losses. It is also the most frequent vaginal infection of women between 15 to 44 years old.

We are still unsure of the cause of this bacterial unbalancement but the risks of contracting bacterial vaginosis could increase through tabacco, vaginal shower and multiple sexual partners. Bacterial Vaginosis is not considered as a sexually transmitted infection but it does surface more on very sexually active women.

Vaginosis can be transmitted from one woman to another woman through sexual intercourses.

  • Whitish or greyish fluid vaginal losses.
  • Vagina could have a fish smell with an intensified fish smell after sex.
  • Absence of symptom can occur for certain women.

Even if vaginosis can clear itself, it is strongly recommended to consult a health care specialist if you have symptoms. You will be prescribed antibiotics in the form of oral tablets, cream, or vaginal suppository.

Most symptoms will disappear normally between 2-3 days after the start of the antibiotic treatment. It is important to finish and complete the whole antibiotic treatment.

Bacterial vaginosis can increase the risks of catching STIs. If you have a vaginosis during the abortion it increases the risks of infections.
